“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
God didn’t suggest courage to Joshua. He commanded it. Three times in the opening chapter of Joshua, God tells him to be strong and courageous. Not a suggestion — a wartime order from a commanding officer who knew exactly what was ahead.
Joshua had just watched Moses die. He was now responsible for leading over a million people into enemy territory. The giants in the land were real. The opposition was organized. And God’s response was: Be strong. Be courageous. I will be with you.
Why Men Struggle With Courage Today
Most men today are not afraid of giants with swords. But they are afraid of something just as real: failure, rejection, inadequacy. The fear of not being enough as a husband, father, leader, or provider quietly drives more men out of the fight than any external enemy ever could.
That fear does not announce itself. It shows up as procrastination. Passive leadership. Numbing out with screens instead of engaging with your family. None of it looks like fear on the surface. But underneath, it is the same paralysis Joshua was warned about.
SOAP Bible Study: Joshua 1:9
- Scripture: Write out Joshua 1:9 by hand. Notice the three-part command: be strong, be courageous, do not be afraid.
- Observation: God gives the reason for courage before the command. The presence precedes the promise. Where in your life are you waiting for certainty before you act?
- Application: Name the one thing you have been avoiding because of fear. Write it down. Then write Joshua 1:9 next to it. That is your assignment for this week.
- Prayer: Lord, give me the courage Joshua had: not the absence of fear, but action in spite of it. You go before me. Help me follow.
Courage Is Not the Absence of Fear
Joshua was not fearless. God would not need to command courage if fear was not present. Real courage is not the man who feels nothing. It is the man who feels everything and moves anyway, because he knows who stands with him.
The same God who cleared the Jordan, dropped the walls of Jericho, and led a nation through the wilderness is standing with you today. He commanded you. Be strong. Be courageous. He is with you.
