How to Do the SOAP Bible Study Method (Step-by-Step Guide for Men)

The SOAP method is a simple 4-step framework that helps you read the Bible in a focused, meaningful way in just 15 minutes a day. Here is everything you need to know to start today.

What Is the SOAP Bible Study Method?

SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It is a journaling-based method for engaging with the Bible that goes beyond simply reading words on a page. Instead of reading passively, SOAP turns your Bible time into an active conversation with God.

The method was popularized by Wayne Cordeiro, a pastor and author who found that journaling through Scripture using these four steps led to deeper understanding and more consistent daily Bible habits. Today, thousands of men use the SOAP method every morning as their primary way of studying Scripture.

Why the SOAP Method Works for Men

Most men struggle with Bible reading for one of three reasons:

  1. They do not know where to start.
  2. They read but feel like nothing is sticking.
  3. They start strong and quit within a week.

The SOAP method solves all three. It gives you a clear starting point, a structured way to engage, and a short enough format (15 minutes) that you can actually do it every day without feeling overwhelmed.

The 4 Steps of the SOAP Bible Study Method

S — Scripture

Read your passage for the day. Then write out the verse or verses that stand out most to you. Do not rush this. Read slowly. If a verse catches your attention or feels personally relevant, write it down word for word.

Tip: Start with a short passage — one chapter or less. You are not trying to cover ground. You are trying to hear from God.

O — Observation

Now look at the verse you wrote and ask: What do I notice? Who is speaking? Who is the audience? What is the context? What words or phrases stand out? Write your observations without interpreting or applying yet — just notice what the text says.

Tip: Ask questions like: What is repeated? What is contrasted? What surprises me? What does the author emphasize?

A — Application

This is the most powerful step. Ask: How does this apply to my life today? Be specific. Do not let it stay abstract. Connect the truth of Scripture to your marriage, your work, your parenting, your fears, your decisions right now.

Tip: Finish this sentence: “Because of this verse, I will _____________ today.” Specificity is what separates men who grow from men who just read.

P — Prayer

Close your SOAP time by writing a short prayer that responds to what God showed you in the passage. Thank Him. Ask Him for help applying it. Surrender whatever came up during your observation and application.

Tip: Keep it honest. You are not writing for an audience — you are talking to God. Use your own words.

A Complete SOAP Example

Here is a full example using Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

S — Scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”

O — Observation: Solomon is contrasting two things — trusting God vs. trusting your own logic. “All your heart” and “all your ways” suggest this is not partial trust. Full surrender precedes the straight path.

A — Application: I have been trying to figure out the business situation on my own. I have been running the numbers, making plans, and not once praying about the actual direction. Today I am going to stop and bring it to God before I make any more calls.

P — Prayer: Lord, I confess I lean on my own understanding way too often. I act like my plan is the most reliable thing I have. Forgive me. I choose to trust You with this business decision today. Make the path straight not because I deserve it, but because You are faithful. Amen.

How to Build a Daily SOAP Habit

Research shows it takes an average of 66 days to build a new habit — not 21 like the old myth claimed. Here are the three things that will help you stay consistent:

  • Same time every morning. Most men find 6–7 AM works best — before email, before meetings, before the noise of the day starts.
  • Same place. Your brain associates the physical space with focused thought. A specific chair, a specific desk — it trains your brain to engage.
  • Keep it short. 15 minutes is the target. Even on hard mornings, 10 minutes beats zero. Lower the barrier, build the habit.

What You Need to Get Started

All you need is:

  • A Bible (any translation works — ESV, NIV, NLT, and CSB are popular)
  • A journal or notebook (or a digital note-taking app)
  • 15 minutes

If you want a head start, we send a complete SOAP study to your inbox every morning at 6 AM — Scripture selected, prompts written, ready to open and go. Over 3,200 men are already starting their mornings this way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a SOAP study take?

Target 15 minutes. Scripture and observation take about 5 minutes. Application is 5 minutes. Prayer closes with another 5. You can go longer as the habit grows, but start at 15 to keep the barrier low.

What Bible translation should I use for SOAP?

Any modern translation works well. The ESV is popular for its accuracy. The NIV and NLT read more naturally. The CSB is a solid middle ground. Avoid paraphrases like The Message for your primary SOAP reading — use them as a supplement.

Where in the Bible should I start?

For men new to daily Bible reading, we recommend starting in Proverbs (practical wisdom) or the Gospel of Mark (fast-paced, action-focused). If you want something structured, our free daily studies select the passage for you each morning.

Can I do SOAP digitally instead of in a journal?

Yes. Notes apps, Notion, or any digital journal work fine. Some men prefer handwriting because it slows them down and helps retention. Try both and see what keeps you more consistent.
